Three members of an Arlington family convicted in a multimillion-dollar tax return fraud scheme were sentenced to prison Thursday, according to a Department of Justice news release.
David Hunt, twin sons Baylon Hunt and Brandon Hunt and the twins’ half-brother Corey Burt filed false tax returns in the name of trusts they claimed to control. The group applied for more than $8.5 million in refunds they weren’t entitled to receive, according to the release.
Authorities have said that Baylon Hunt and Brandon Hunt submitted fake documents, including altered money orders, to the IRS to support the scheme.
“Even after receiving warning letters to discontinue their fraudulent submissions, they continued filing false returns and other documents with the IRS,” the release states.
The co-conspirators eventually received more than $1.7 million from the IRS. They used these fraudulently obtained funds to buy a Cadillac Escalade, a house in Mississippi, cryptocurrency and other items, according to the release.
David Hunt and Corey Burt were both sentenced to nearly eight years in prison for their part in the scheme. Baylon Hunt was sentenced to just over three years. Brandon Hunt’s sentencing is scheduled for May.
The defendants have been jointly ordered to pay more than $1.7 million in restitution to the U.S. government, according to the release.
