  • The assaults happened in the late 1990s
  • Two vehicles of interest identified

The public is being asked for help in the hunt for a serial rapist who targetted underage girls and women along the NSW Central Coast.

The sickening attacks are believed to have occurred between 1997 and 2000.

Detectives from the NSW Police Sex Crimes Squad said the man, who they believe is caucasian and would now be aged in his 70s, is suspected to have been responsible for the sexual assaults on two girls and four women.

The girls were as young as 16, while the women were aged between 23 and 77.

Police have identified two vehicles which they believe could crack the decades-old mystery of the rapist's identity.

One of those is a white Hyundai Excel which investigators believe was used in two of the attacks, reports the Daily Telegraph.

The other is a Toyota ute, believed to be linked to the man.

A picture of the ute has been released to the public in the hopes it may trigger the memory of Central Coast locals or visitors to areas such as Shelly Beach, Wamberal, Forresters Beach, Budgewoi, during the late 1990s.

'Police never give up on seeking justice for victims. Sex Crimes Squad boss Detective Superintendent, Jayne Doherty, said.

'No matter how much time has passed, we continue to pursue every available avenue to identify those responsible for serious crimes.

'We recognise that as time passes, people's circumstances and allegiances change.

'Relationships shift, families grow apart, and individuals who may not have been willing or able to assist years ago may now feel differently. That's why we're renewing this appeal.'

The man, who was in his 40s when the attacks occurred, is believed to have a tanned complexion, a solid build and light-coloured hair.

He was estimated to be between 170cm and 180cm tall.
